Finally we have weather nice enough to actually want to be outside for long periods of time. The dogs are in heaven and have spent the last few days soaking up the sun and making me let them indoors and outdoors 549058409 times an hour.
Nate has been gone for the last week so it has made doing any of my photo work difficult so I’ve been storing ideas for the one day he would be home and we will actually have time to work on them; today.
This piece is called “Father Hen” after the idea of baby chicks following their mother around in a line. This was a piece that kind of just came to me in the moment and I really like how it turned out.
I knew that I wanted to do something involving Nate mowing the yard since that’s what he was doing when I got out of bed this morning; it kind of worked out perfectly. Louis had green feet from going out in the yard this morning after it had been freshly cut and at first I though I wanted the other dogs to be doing something and him sitting on the deck in the shot so that I could showcase his green feet. We always joke that Louis is the grinch because he kind of looks like the white and tan version so when he gets grass stained feet we always think it’s super funny and that he’s turning into the Grinch.
….. maybe It’s just Nate and I who see the resemblance hahha….
Anyway, when I was setting up to do this photo and deciding where I wanted to shoot it at in our yard, I thought of the idea of having them following Nate like baby chicks. I really liked the idea of having them lined up by largest to smallest.
I’m really happy with how this piece turned out. It almost reminds me of the the drawings of an ape turning into a modern human haha.
It also sort of loosely reminds me of the piece Blackmon did referencing the Beatles cover which I didn’t think of until I started putting it together in Photoshop.
So to actually make this piece I had Nate walk each dog individually on a leash in the general area where I took the images for the background of the composite. Then I chose a picture of each dog based on their leg placement. I didn’t want them all to be exactly the same so I tried to get some differences in their foot placements. I like how Nate and Jack and Louis all have their left legs forward in the shot and Ghost and Luna have their right legs forward. I didn’t want to make it all exactly the same to where it would be more obvious that the image was digitally manipulated. I think the differences make it feel more authentic and that helps to not give away the fact that it’s a composite image.
