I played around with making a composite for Louis’ 8th Birthday this past week. I definitely don’t intend for this to be in the series but it’s a “rough draft” for a piece I do have in mind. I wanted to try a more staged shoot outside just to really see what it would look like. The first piece that started all of these composites was one of three dogs at the kitchen table with pup-cakes and so I sort of wanted to do that same thing at the outdoor table.
I really love all of the lines in this piece. The different fences, the siding on the house, the deck, the stairs. I think it’s really interesting. I want to play around more with repetition and pattern in my pieces and I like how this sort of does that but in a natural and more subtle way than adding in elements that aren’t normally present.
I kind of want to play around with incorporating other people and potentially other dogs in the future just to see where that takes me. In the final Spring grad critique one of the professors brought up taking into account and using the foreground, middle ground and background to my advantage more. In this piece it just kind of clicked on how I could do that.
When I re-shoot this I want to shoot it from the same spot. I don’t want the plastic chair in the right to be there for the re-shoot. I also want more of the sky in the next piece. So for this piece the idea is a summer cookout with friends and where the dogs are getting into things and annoying people like they would be.
For the foreground I want to try having someone sitting on the deck stairs, maybe semi-cropped out where you see there feet and legs. I’m envisioning Louis sitting next to this person and they have a drink sitting on the step that Louis is sampling while the person is looking over their shoulder to the right (I’ll probably shoot them fully in the scene and decide whether or not to crop it after the fact.)
For the middle ground I want a table filled with drinks and food. A couple people will be sitting there and Jack will be sitting on someone’s lap and Luna will be begging. Or maybe the people will be talking and not paying attention and one of the dogs will be stealing food off of the table.
In the background I want a little scene to be happening in the grass part. Maybe people playing cornhole or Frisbee or something. I want to have Ghost jumping up to steal the Frisbee or running off with a cornhole bag.
I also have other ideas to fit with this theme, like a closer up scene of the cornhole match with the dogs interfering, sitting in the middle, stealing cornhole bags etc. I also like the idea of a shot of someone grilling food at the grill and one of the dogs being a nuisance. Maybe this scene you can see something going on inside the house since the grill is near the window. That would give me a little more room to play around with the foreground and background. I’m really excited to see where these go and to try some different things!
